Students are assumed to have taken chemistry courses in high school and to be familiar with basic aspects of atomic theory, balancing chemical equations, stoichiometry, and gas laws. CHEM101 covers the structure of the atom, periodic properties, chemical bonds, Lewis structures, VB and MO theory, thermochemistry and the kinetic theory of gases.
Note that the first three introductory chapters of the your textbook will not be covered explicitly in class. Chapters four and five will discussed briefly. This is because we do not want to bore you with repetition of high school material. Please review the contents of these chapters. If the material is completely unknown to you, contact your instructor as soon as possible.
Note that we will not follow the order of chapters in the book. We will start with chapter four and five. Then we will cover chapters 8 through 11, and then we will go back to chapters 7 and 6.
Attending classes is compulsory. Only if you are ill, you are excused. It is policy at Bilkent University that students who miss more than 25% of the classes fail the course. You are expected to be on time. Late arrivals disturb the class and will not be tolerated. Please note that we are aware of practises like signing attendance sheets for friends, or coming at the end of the class just to sign attendance sheets. Measures to prevent such behavior may be taken.
The lab work complements the class work. Sejarah keperawatan jiwa. Both, content of classes and labs belong together and should be known at the end of the course.Study Habits:You will have a lot work this semster and maybe it will be very hard for you to keep up. Please try to work continuously from the start. After the first couple of weeks one midterm exam will follow the other within days and there will be no time to prepare yourself, if you look at the material for the first time the night before the exam. The only way to succeed is to study continuously so that you need only to review the material before the exam. Try to do this during the day and sleep the night before the exam!!! Required Materials: ClassesLab Textbook: Petrucci, Herring, Madura, Bissonette ’General Chemistry’, Pearson, 10th Edition Lab manual ’Principles of Chemistry I - CHEM101, available in the Meteksan bookstore Scientific Calculator Lab Coat (cotton)NotebookLabs: Lab work is compulsory. Only if you are excused with an official doctor’s note, you may miss a lab. In this case you will have to come to a make-up lab at the end of the semester. Please consider that this is more work for all of us. Therefore try to attend the labs as scheduled. Since there are three lab sessions for the three sections of this course, try to make up a missed lab in one of the other sessions. Let us know immediately if you missed a lab, so that we can reschedule your lab session. Students who miss labs unexcused, fail the course. You must come to the labs prepared. For this reason reading assignments are given. You will bring answers to some very simple prelab questions, which will be collected at the beginning of each lab. The questions are answered easily while reading the assignment. Since you have to hand in the answers to prelab questions, it might be a good idea to keep a copy and use it for the exam preparation. To make sure that these answers are not copies from friends, you will also write a short quiz before the lab starts. Unfortunately, we have to be so strict because students tend to ignore our pleas to prepare for labs. Coming to labs unprepared is dangerous, since you will work with chemicals that are by no means harmless. In addition, you simply learn nothing in the lab, if you do not try to understand what you are doing. So please prepare yourself as careful as possible.Old Exams:Exams: Exams cover the contents of the classes, of the book chapters, and of the labs, including prelab reading assignments and experiments. You do not need to memorize lab procedures but you should remember the main properties of the elements and their most important chemical reactions.
One A4 page cheat sheet is allowed for all exams. The cheat sheet has to be handwritten and has to show the name of the owner. You will receive F for the exam, if you are caught with a paper that does not belong to you and if you are caught with more than one piece of paper.
You need a calculator. Use of telefons is not permitted.
No materials such as calculators and erasers will be shared by students.
Homework: Homework is necessary for practicing problem solving and for identifying difficulties with the material. Homeworks will be done online on the ’Mastering Chemistry’ website. Your textbook contains the access kit. Exam problems will be similar to the homework assignments.
